Course Description

Registration for this course is closed.  Students currently enrolled in the course can complete the course until the end of their 6 month registration period. This course presents in-depth comprehensive, integrated online content by a faculty of internationally respected experts in the field of visual impairments and low vision rehabilitation. In addition to theory, practical application is emphasized throughout the course.


The course is designed as a self-paced personal enrichment continuing education program. The most current practices and policies on low vision rehabilitation are presented. The course covers much of the body of knowledge that ACVREP requires the applicant to know for certification as a Low Vision Therapist. The most current practices and policies on low vision rehabilitation are presented. Lectures may be repeated until material is mastered and the practice exams can be used as a study guide for the final exam. The final exam consists of questions from the practice exams.


The course consists of 22 lectures that cover the following topics:

  • Anatomy and Physiology of Vision
  • Diseases of the Visual System
  • Visual Perception
  • Visual Impairments
  • Optics and Optical Devices
  • Functional and ADL Assessments
  • Visual Skills Training
  • Rehabilitation Services and Resources
  • Vision Enhancement and Adaptive Technology
  • Understanding the Visually Impaired Patient


Supplemental course materials accompany some lectures. These handouts may contain articles, images, video clips, forms, and other educational material. Also, students can ask questions of the faculty over topical forums and conduct online discussions with other students through the Discussion Board.
